Meetings are held in the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, 1600 W. 27th St. N., Wichita, KS 67204. Click here for directions.
All PQG meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month. The afternoon meeting is from 1:00 – 3:00pm, and the evening meeting is from 7:00 – 9:00pm. Sometimes the program is the same for both meetings; other times two different programs are presented by that month’s speaker.
Many members come early to meetings to get a head start not only on visiting friends but also on participating in the various opportunities PQG offers them there. To a first-time visitor, walking in on one of our meetings just before it gets started could feel a little daunting. Despite the whirlwind of activity, we are an orderly bunch. You’ll be made to feel welcome right as you enter the door, and the following is what you will encounter as you spend time with us.
Welcome/Beekeeper:
The Welcome/Beekeeper committee will greet guests and ask them to register. Then guests will be given a name tag, shown the hospitality table and explain the many areas and tables in the room. New members also will be assisted by this group to make sure they find a seat, have their questions answered, and will be notified of any new member functions.
Membership Table:
This will be your first stop when entering the meeting room. And this is where it all begins for a visitor who wishes to join us. The New Member Contact person will assist all interested visitors in filling out a Profile Sheet, begin processing their annual dues of $45, and give the new member their Welcome Packet which contains a membership directory. Visitors are welcome! There is a visitor fee of $5. Afterwards, new members can check out books from the Guild library and more. Please visit our Membership page for more information on becoming a member of the Prairie Quilt Guild.
Hospitality Table:
PQG members and visitors alike are given a door prize ticket at this table. The ticket could win you a packet of fabric or some other gift generously donated to the Guild by our local quilt shops. The Hospitality Chairperson will announce the door prize then the number, in that order). So, keep track of that ticket!
Guild Library:
The Guild provides a library for members’ use which is attended by two librarians during the meeting. Members may check out books, magazines, and other materials for a month at a time. No renewals are allowed. Late fees are $1 per item. Membership card must be shown at time of check-out.
Business Meeting:
The first portion of our monthly meetings begin with old and new business. The chairpersons from various standing and special committees make their announcements during this time. This part of the meeting takes around thirty minutes.
Show ‘n Share:
After the business meeting, members and visitors line up to show the Guild their latest completed projects or special estate sale finds. A gallery of quilts shown during the previous twelve months can be seen on the Show ‘n Share page.
Program:
A five- to ten-minute break lets everyone stretch their legs and peruse the various tables again before the program begins. The Prairie Quilt Guild has been honored in the past to host nationally known quilters such as Elly Sienkiewicz, Carol Doak, and Mary Ellen Hopkins as our speakers. We’ve also welcomed regional and local talent to share their stories, tips and tricks with us. Every year, usually in January, several in our membership become our speakers en masse during Mini-Workshops. In the meeting room, up to half a dozen mini workshops are presented at which we learn about techniques or new quilting gadgets. For a list of our upcoming speakers and the workshops they’ll teach, visit our Programs & Workshops page.
